It's obvious, the search engines care about "on page" web optimization- like keywords, meta tags, and content on your web page etc.  But a lot of people also know that the real "magic" to high search rankings is really the "off page" optimization.  More importantly, it's about PageRank. 

What is PageRank?  In a nutshell it's mathematical formula created by Google that tells how important a page is by the number of other websites that link to it.  Think of it this way...

You walk into a room and 10 people are sitting there.  You ask if anyone in the room is doctor.  Two people raise their hands.  So which one is the doctor?  Maybe they both are.  But then you ask the OTHER people in the room, to point to the doctor.  6 people point at one person, and 2 people point at the other.  So now, which one do you thing is most likely to be the doctor?

Well that's PageRank's logic.  Each website that links to your website is like a vote to your website.  It tells the search engines that one site is better than the other because it has more links to it, so therefore it's got more votes, and therefore it ranks higher in the search results.  PageRank (PR)is ranked on scale of 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest.  It not only takes into account the number of links to your site, but the PR of the sites linking to you. 

If 5 website with PR 6 link to you its a lot better than 5 sites with PR of 4.
